Duffy theatre

Duffy theatre

After Morning tea we headed to the hall another school was coming too. It was about Sam and Duffy being addicted to a video game called magic bricks but eventually, Duffy got bored and just wanted to play with his cousin. So he put on his nana’s glasses and did a dance called the dumpling and within seconds he was sucked into his favourite game. His mission was to get out of the game before his time ran out he got pixelated And he had to live in the game forever.

There were mysteries to be solved and battles to be fought, Sam was doing all she could to help and while she was helping she was getting annoyed and then they ended up in an argument. Sam went too far and imitated him and ended up in the game too.

As they went along the way they discovered their nana was a computer scientist they also discovered her name because their nana made magic bricks they had a small fortune soon enough they found out they had to do the dumpling again to get out. When they got out all they wanted to do was read.

The moral of the story: You might enjoy yourself gaming on the Xbox but sometimes you need to come back to the real world and communicate with the world maybe even go outside and play for a bit.

how to play basketball

How to play basketball

Basketball is a world played sport by the young and the adults. It is quite a competitive sport. I play basketball myself.

You need to have a team, people usually have a team of five or more. You’re practically playing netball but you can dribble down the court and do a couple of stunts like wrapping while you dribble.

My favourite types of defence are things like screening where you have the ball and you can put your fist in the air and someone else will guard the defending person on you while you do a layup. When you do a layup you can run with the ball without dribbling. If you run with the ball without dribbling down the court the referee will blow the whistle and you’ll have to hand the ball over.

There are five positions named; point guard (who guard the key to the shooting area), the shooting guard (they practically just defend the team with the ball from shooting a goal), the centre, the power forward and the small forward.

There are two hoops at either end of the court. When you shoot you have to aim for the white square on the backboard.

You can shoot inside the key or from the 2 or three-pointer. When the opposite teams do a foul on you like shack you when you shoot you get a couple of penalty shots. A shack Is where if the player is looking for someone to pass so you can hit the ball out of their hands. If you touch the person you shacked you will get a personal foul. A personal foul is where if you make contact with the person you are defending you will get points taken off you or your team. When you play basketball you have to be cautious of your surroundings.

If you’re not careful enough the injuries you could get includes things like a broken ankle, hip/thigh injury and sometimes a head injury.

The person who invented Basketball or mini ball as it is still called today was Candian James Naismith. Basketball is an enjoyable game and is played worldwide.

Striving for the Summit

Striving for the Summit

In the month of May 2019 Australian mountaineer Gill Lee made his fourth attempt to reach the summit of Everest. Because of the heavy traffic on the Nepal route he used the north side of the mountain called the Tibet route. His goal was to climb Mount Everest without an oxygen tank.

At the height of 7600m his two sherpa guides noticed that he was getting ill. As they climbed further up the maunga his symptoms were getting worse. His lips were turning blue, he was constantly coughing and then his body switched off and he was out cold for three hours!!! Because he was unconscious and his body was limp they dragged him down the slope to his tent. The pair were doing everything they could to keep him warm by putting him in his sleeping bag with hot water bottles.

On the way down the mountain they met a Chinese rope fixing team who helped make him a sled with a sleeping mat and ropes. As the snow faded away the group called a man with a yak so they could get him across the rocky terrain. Gillian Lee recalls that was the most uncomfortable ride he’d ever had.

After reaching base camp a helicopter was waiting there for him to be loaded. The trip took around 20 minutes. When they arrived at Kathmandu Hospital his mother was beside herself with rage. She said he was so selfish that he put peoples lives at risk just because he didn’t want to use an oxygen tank. He was indeed lucky he escaped death.

I wonder if he will ever try to climb everest again?

Will anyone want to guide him again?

speech

Introduction
Kia ora, do you like helping people? ‘Cause I do. Giving and helping makes me feel like I’ve done a good deed. Maybe if people give more, there would be less hardship.  Giving does something pretty cool to your brain too. So, here’s why I think giving is way better.

Do you know what It’s like to be poor?

Just imagine if you were living in a small house in poverty or even worse living on the street because you don’t have enough to pay the rent. Imagine what it would be like on the cold stormy nights. Without much shelter. Just imagine what those poor citizens of New Zealand sitting on the streets and the people living in poverty are going through and imagine yourself in those conditions. It’s not very nice is it?

Helping people in need Is a type of giving where nothing is expected in return.  Take the Orange sky van for example. Two kind men run a small charity of their own, providing poor and homeless Aucklanders with warm showers and a place to clean their clothes and other things that may need washing. This may not seem like much to you, but it’s a big deal to those in need. It helps them because they don’t need to choose between eating or being clean.

Ways you could help are small things like;
make a free food caravan for those who can’t afford to go to the supermarket. Or if you don’t have money to spare, there are plenty of free ways to give. Like...
Hand down your clothes instead of selling them.
Talk to people. Listening to someone is giving your time and could motivate them to take action.
Giving to people inspires others to give as well. If more people give maybe there will be less hardship. Now imagine if everyone gave a little bit back to their communities. How different would our world be?

Giving makes you feel good but receiving doesn’t always. Most of the time you feel grateful but sometimes you have a negative or a not so good reaction.

To show you what I mean, here are 3 chocolates. One for you… one for you… and this one especially for you. (wink)

You might be feeling super grateful because you were hungry and you love chocolate. You might be feeling embarrassed because I just put you on the spot. You might feel guilty because it seems like I’m bribing you [ wink] but I’m not [ wink ] I’m just showing you how receiving doesn't always make people feel good. That's why giving is better than receiving. I’ve just given three people chocolate and it made me feel great.

Did you know that giving does amazing things to your brain? Well it does.
Giving sets of chemical reactions in the brain. Like serotonin which is to do with our mood, dopamine which helps us feel good, oxytocin which is to do with our compassion and the mesolimbic pathway which is also called our reward centre. Pretend like there are tiny people in your brain named serotonin, dopamine,  and oxytocin and they hold hands along the mesolimbic pathway then they let of party poppers called endorphins. As a group they create what’s known as a helpers high.

When you receive too much, you can become a spoilt brat and begin to expect stuff. Receiving things can feel good too but when you give, you are in charge. You can choose to give whenever you want if giving makes you feel good but you can't choose to receive whenever you want.

People quite often say, “Don't cross oceans for people who wouldn't cross a puddle for you.”
Which seems like good advice.
But then I found a meme by a great author who is unknown, that said “No. Do it. Do cross oceans for people. Love all people. No conditions attached. No wondering whether or not they are worthy. Cross oceans, climb mountains. Life and love isn't about what you gain it's about what you give.”

That changed my mind. How about you?

Te kauru's assembly term 2

this term we did an assembly  about the true story of the three little pigs.
It was told by John Sheska retold by my class. I think our class did a fantastic job at acting in our assembly. It took a lot of practice and work but we managed to get right in the end I hope the school and you enjoyed.
I think this was a really good story to read and everyone played their role quiet happily I would
definitely recommend this book to little children and adults too.

Te Reo cartoon strip

W.A.L.T Extend our Te Reo by asking and answering questions and to being able to translate from Te Reo into English.

I liked making a google draw to make our Te Reo presentation more interesting. What I thought was tricky was finding the right Te Reo and to see if it was correct. We were also banned from using the most common language in Te Reo like mama and papa. We had to use the harder language like Whaea Keke.

EMR - thank you letters

Dear Isabel,
On behalf of Te Kauru and Te Manga students, we would like to thank you for this amazing experience of seeing wildlife in our oceans
My highlight of the day was getting in the ocean and seeing some exotic fish that I never knew existed It was amazing. I absolutely loved discovering their names on the charts we were given. Some fish species weren’t even on the list!!! When I was around the seaweed, I got nervous because I thought a fish was going to JUMP out at me. I had the best time ever, I wish I could do it again.
Once again I would like to thank you for putting your time and effort into giving me and my class an amazing experience of seeing a marine reserve at whatuwhiwhi.

Yours sincerely
Caedance. Brown

beach education day

On Friday we had a beach education day to learn how to do some cool things. Our instructors names were Ari, Emma, Liam and Vi. On land we learnt what gadgets they use to help people and why we should not get in the water to either save someone  or go to a beach without supervision. In the water we got told how to use a flotation device. And even cooler we got to try rescue our friends with them. The marine thing they tried to teach us was how to stay safe around our waters and who we shall dial to if we see someone in trouble never get in the water to try save someone.

red snapper project C.A.B

Snapper

Introduction
Red snapper or the Lutjanus campechanus are the most common fish that people like to fish from the salty waters because they make delicious meals.

Threats

The snapper prefer to live near rocks by the coral reef. The reason they hang around those areas is because they are much harder to find by their predators. Did you know we are on their list for predators? If there are no rocks for the snapper they will hang round the depths of 15 metres to 60 metres deep. But they can be found about 200 metres deep. Their predators include barracuda who are deadly to anything that is made out of flesh and bone. Sharks, commonly Mako sharks and Great White sharks, are also high on their predator list. These predatory animals only eat Juvenile’s because they are easy targets. There is also no law saying they can’t eat snapper smaller than 8 centimeters. At Matai bay, there is a restriction saying you are not to fish there. It is called a Rahui.

Diet

These common fish have an extraordinary but small diet. They are predators to fish we are not likely to know about. The Lutjanus campechanus eat small fish known as the zooplankton, shrimp, octopus and a few more other other fish like mollusks. But they can still be real scavengers sometimes.

Breeding

Did you know that red snapper can lay up to 75 million eggs at a time? But now they can only breed up to 36,00 eggs.Spawning starts early may and the process takes 120 days. But the snapper have to mature to 3 to 4 years old before they can breed. When they are at the age they are supposed to be they are about 20 to 28 centimeters long. They can live for over 60 years and grow up to 105 centimeters. They start to lay eggs through spring and summer. Female snapper find a partner in October and sometimes February. the male attracts the female by swimming circles around her

Population

Did you know a snapper population is about 14 million? And if they keep breeding who knows how many there may be. In 2016 people over the far north caught all together 14 million snapper. For snapper you’re allowed to catch seven snapper maximum.

Description

Snapper are copper - pink on top. They also have a numerous amount of blue spots on their sides. On their underbellies they have a silvery patch of scales. They are populated in the warm waters of NZ They're an abundance of them near a place called Hauraki Gulf. How to measure a snapper When you measure a snapper you should measure from the tip of the head to the curve of the tail. Most people go from tip of the head to the tip of the tail.

 Cool new facts

A red snapper can live up to 60 years old. You know that they are old when they have a bump on their foreheads from crushing kina. Their nickname is old man snapper. Snapper can also be known as the Pagrus auratus that’s one of the many scientific names out of the many species they have. The maori name for snapper it is tāmure.
